Adapt Marketing Consulting partnered with Sustain Dane and Elevate to increase language accessibility for the Efficiency Navigator program—a collaborative energy efficiency initiative focused on reducing utility costs and improving housing quality for small- to medium-sized rental properties in Dane County. Our work centered on translating program materials into Spanish to ensure equitable access for Spanish-speaking contractors, property owners, and tenants.
Summary
Sustain Dane and Elevate’s Efficiency Navigator program helps landlords and building owners implement energy and water-saving upgrades, with a focus on naturally occurring affordable housing. Recognizing that many stakeholders in the Madison area speak Spanish as a primary language—especially within the contractor and tenant communities—Adapt Marketing Consulting was brought in to support the translation of key documents and outreach materials. This work ensured Spanish-speaking audiences had full access to program benefits, instructions, and opportunities.
Challenge
The Efficiency Navigator program faced a major communication barrier: many of the contractors and property owners most affected by energy inefficiency and high utility costs did not speak English fluently. Without bilingual materials, these groups were less likely to engage with the program, missing out on critical financial and technical support. In addition, outreach needed to build trust and convey technical information clearly and culturally appropriately.
Solutions
Adapt Marketing Consulting provided professional translation services to convert program materials into Spanish, including informational flyers, contractor onboarding materials, and application forms. Our culturally responsive translation approach ensured the messaging was not only accurate but also accessible and relatable. The result was a stronger connection with bilingual communities, improved contractor participation, and broader awareness of the program’s benefits. By removing language as a barrier, our work helped advance Sustain Dane and Elevate’s mission of inclusive climate action and community resilience.
